Since inception in 2004, the Kenya Institute of Environment Assessment (KIEA) - now the Environment Institute of Kenya (EIK), has continued to put in place structures to ensure it effectively carries out its mandate.

Vision: The Institute’s vision is to be a world class recognized Environmental Institution in the provision of quality environmental and ecological services towards achieving sustainable environment.

Mission: EIK’s mission is to empower its members and promote professionalism in environmental governance towards sustainable development in Kenya.

Mandate: In accordance with the EIK constitution, the Council has a mandate from its Membership to among others:

  • Maintain, promote and improve standards in conduct of environmental impact assessment, audit, strategic environmental impact assessment, social impact assessment and other relevant tools in environmental management.
    Administer the register of the Institute’s membership and establish a panel of specialists to review specific technical issues with respect to its mandate.
  • Assist, propagate and promote knowledge and skills in environmental management and sustainable development in public and private sector including but not limited to research and knowledge dissemination.
  • Initiate schemes designed to improve performance in the industry by recognizing and rewarding those individuals and organizations that attain the highest competitive standards in environmental management and sustainable development.

Principles: EIK’s guiding principles are integrity and professionalism among its Members. 

Membership: EIK’s membership comprises NEMA registered Experts and students pursuing education in environmental management and related courses.
